Her brother Kikuo returned to 1930s Japan after finishing his studies in France to become a translator. He soon receives a letter from Tsuruha, who was thought to be dead. To inquire about matters, Kikuotravels to his sister's rural home to discover her there along with a doll that looks mysteriously like her daughter.
