Entre 1856 et 1864, deux hommes de convictions s'affrontent pour décider de l'avenir du Canada. Ce drame de deux heures met en lumière la lutte acharnée opposant John A. Macdonald, le charismatique chef du Parti conservateur, et George Brown, fondateur du journal torontois Globe et chef de l'organisation politique qui deviendra le Parti libéral, connu pour sa détermination à toute épreuve. Ils poursuivent avec passion des visions radicalement opposées et nourrissent l'un pour l'autre une haine profonde. Lorsque Macdonald prend le contrôle du Parti conservateur et en fait la force dominante de l'assemblée, il élabore un plan d'action tellement brillant et audacieux qu'il mène à la création de la Confédération, et donc du Canada tel que nous le connaissons.
